Name:  Broad Street Maps

Field:  Global Positioning, Mapping

Geographic Scope: Various Locations

Mission: Broad Street Maps makes maps that improve the delivery of healthcare to people in need. Working collaboratively with our NGO customers, we produce maps and data graphics designed to reflect the ground truth of the people they serve, help track and improve operations and reveal strategic opportunities. Our mission includes training in order to leave behind basic skills for capturing, manipulating and displaying geographic data, so the maps can adapt dynamically with the needs of our customers and the people they serve.

Our model has 4 key cornerstones:

Data Collection

Collaborative Project Design

Training

Cartography

As geographers, we seek to answer the question: why do things happen where they happen? Why are certain people or places disproportionately affected by health problems? In order to address the inequitable social and geographic determinants of health, we must employ geographic methods, the most powerful of which is GIS mapping software. Historically, these methods have only been available to large corporations or organizations with the capacity and resources to employ GIS experts.

Broad Street Maps supports health organizations by designing and implementing individualized mapping projects using free, open source GIS software. We use a handheld GPS to collect spatial data, and then connect it with other existing information about patients or families. This allows us to make many different kinds of maps: physical reference maps showing the distribution of patients, maps showing where people live in proximity to health centers or hospitals, maps that identify families that meet a specific set of criteria, maps that can accompany grant proposals or reports, or maps that can be posted on social media to show supporters where local staff worked that week. In this way, we identify ourselves as a capacity-building organization that uses geographic data to help organizations visualize what they do, and do it better.
